Our History

1943
It all started 75 years ago, when John Kopca (Gramps) opened up an automotive service station called Kopca Automotive. His son Richard (Dick Sr.) worked for the auto shop as a mechanic, and his daughter Liz ran the front desk. John owned the auto shop from 1943-1984.

1968
John changed the name to what it is today: John the Muffler Man, at the suggestion of a salesman who thought the name might bring in more business.

1977
By the late 1970s, Richard’s son–also named Richard (Dick Jr.) was working at the auto shop full-time, too.

1984
John retired, and Dick Sr. took over management of the business. Richard Sr. owned the business from 1984-2004.

2004
Ownership of John the Muffler Man passed to the third generation, Dick Kopca Jr., in 2004. Dick knew the time was right to expand the business: he added two additional service bays, invested in new equipment and brought on more technicians. This enabled John the Muffler Man to begin servicing brakes, suspension and other general automotive service needs.

2005
Meanwhile, Dick’s son Michael joined the team in 2005, and recently completed his formal education as an automotive service technician. He’s the fourth generation of Kopcas, poised to carry on the excellent service reputation earned by his great-grandfather, his grandfather and his dad. Richard also hired Trever as a shop manager, who is currently still working here today.

2010
Sadly in the beginning of 2010, Richard Jr. passed away due to health issues. His wife, Joanne Kopca, is currently the owner of the business. Michael and Trever still manage and run the auto shop operations.

FUTURE
We want to add additional services to make it more convenient for our customers. Some of these include upgrading/adding equipment and hiring additional service technicians with up-to-date knowledge, education and experience in the field
