UNDERSTANDING YOUR CAR
Pictured at left is a typical exhaust system from a late model car or truck. An exhaust system is designed to conduct the burned gases to the rear of the car and into the air, and also to silence the sounds of combustion. A resonator is a secondary silencing device, sometimes used in conjunction with the muffler. Catalytic converters have been used in most cars since 1975. They contain chemically treated substances which convert harmful emissions into harmless carbon dioxide and water vapor. The catalytic converter operates at temperatures in excess of 1500 degrees Fahrenheit.

There are several components in a vehicle's braking system that affect how your car or truck slows and stops. This hydraulic system uses a special brake fluid which is forced through the system by movement of the master cylinder pistons via the car's brake pedal. Fluid under pressure causes the caliper pistons and wheel cylinders to create friction at each wheel. Your braking system requires service if you are experiencing any of the following conditions:

* excessive pedal travel or effort required

* pedal is spongy, pulsates, or is slow to

   return.

* brakes grab, drag, fade, chatter or pull to

   one side.

* brakes make a scraping noise or squeak,

   or your brake warning light is on.

Whether you need pads and rotors, or new brake lines, John the Muffler Man can handle the job.

Basically, suspension refers to the use of front and rear "springs" to suspend a vehicle's frame, body, engine and power train above the wheels. Spring types include leaf springs, coil springs, air springs and torsion bars. They are paired off in various combinations, and are attached to the vehicle by a number of different mounting techniques. Shock absorbers and struts are used to slow down and control the rapid movement of the car springs as they react to road irregularities.
